What is the Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan?
The Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan aims to improve transport options in Greater Newcastle.
The Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan provides the overarching strategic transport network and vision that will guide future transport planning for the Greater Newcastle area.
The Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan is a key supporting plan of Future Transport and is aligned with the Regional NSW Services and Infrastructure Plan and the NSW Freight and Ports Plan. The Plan was developed in collaboration with the Department of Planning and Environment’s Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan 2036 and has been informed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s A 20-Year Economic Vision for Regional NSW.
Greater Newcastle is one of NSW’s key Global Gateway Cities. Understanding current and future population, employment and other key drivers of travel demand allow us to plan effectively for its future and meet changing needs.
The key focus areas of the Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan are:
- improving the public transport network
- investing in rail corridor infrastructure
- improving rail travel between Newcastle and Sydney
- prioritising car parking availability at public transport stops
- protecting freight movements and reinforcing key links to the port and airport
- increasing frequency of public transport services
- improving connections between the city and airport
- separating passenger and freight rail services in the Lower Hunter corridor.
