What is the Connected and Automated Vehicles Plan?
The Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) Readiness Strategy (2022) is a step forward from our plan which outlines Transport for NSW's vision to increase the use of Connected and Automated Vehicles on NSW roads.
It builds on the lessons learnt, recent research and strategic directions for NSW.
Vehicles which are connected and automated, including driverless vehicles, are transforming transport and bringing a smarter future for passenger and freight mobility. These vehicles bring opportunities for safer travel, lower costs, more transport choices and less congestion on our roads. The Connected and Automated Vehicles Plan supports both the Future Transport Strategy and the Technology Roadmap and details the steps NSW must take to prepare for the use of connected and automated vehicles. It also outlines how we can use CAVs to benefit the community.
Realising the benefits of CAVs will require a collaborative approach between many sectors.
If successful we will:
- give customers a wider range of flexible, affordable journey options
- enable more liveable cities
- improve the movement of freight, enabling economic activity
- allow people to use travel time more productively
- help traffic flow more smoothly
- reduce driver error, injury and fatalities
- reduce fuel consumption and emissions of the transport industry
- attract global talent and investments as NSW becomes a global leader in CAV technology.
